I think what makes the song "Mr Brightside" so catchy is the fact that it is a one note melody. The song was recorded about 17 years ago and it is still a classic played at almost every social gathering. One note meoldies are timeless.

To add to what Sarah said in her comment, part of the appeal of such melodies is that anyone can sing them. At a concert, they're often the melodies that are easiest for a frenzied crowd to chant and scream out, so they're often popular among the masses.

One Note Samba is a really famous example of a one note melody. It's a classic! The simplicity of this song is arguably what makes it so memorable and easy to recite.
