Communicating with the
Body
Here theatre students are
speaking and listening with their bodies
nonverbally. They are exploring how "talking" with
their shoulders, backs, hips, legs, etc. delivers
more information to the viewer. The voice is only
part of an actors' resource of
communication.
Making
Connections
All people have to talk with
their voices and their bodies. Much of what is said
in these two different modes is unconscious.
Teachers can effect a conscious attention to
developing these skills so that communication is
enhanced in real-life situations such as:
interviews, auditions, public speaking, leading a
meeting, and giving a presentation. Communicating
thoughts, ideas, and feelings is important for
successful interactions between people.
Watch the people around you
and decide what you think they are saying both
verbally and nonverbally. Are these messages the
same?
