Governor's School for the Arts - 1999

Energy, enthusiasm and fun characterize the dance studios at the Governor's School for the Arts. Instructors lead the troupe of dancers and occasional guests to the studio, through movements, exercises, and sensory experiences to foster body awareness and freedom of expression through dance. Critical responses to each facet of the instruction enhances the total learning experience.

Students involved in the Visual Arts -- DRAWING, PAINTING, CERAMICS, SCULPTURE, GRAPHICS and PHOTOGRAPHY -- get a taste of the Art School and College experience at the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts.

Group critiques, along with contemplative self-critiques drive the learner's experience each step of the way. Students, Matt Miller (left) and Hoa Khuu (right) take same time out to contemplate their own works and the works of fellow students. Critical Response, 9.3.10.D. (PDE Academic Standards for the Arts and Humanities) suggests that students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to "analyze and interpret works in the arts and humanities from different societies using discriminate and culturally specific vocabulary of critical response."

The Painting studio is alive with activity, and even though the studio seems chaotic, crowded with objects, gadgets, easels, works in progress and ARTISTS, the objectives set forth by the instructor are obvious. The "back-to-basics" approach in employing the Principles of Design, such as LINE, SHAPE, FORM, COLOR, VALUE, TEXTURE and SPACE, coupled with the creative expression of the students and the on-going critical dialogue between the students and the teacher results in amazing works of art.
