Overview: The Small Learning Community, Performing Arts Charter (PAVA) Vocal &Piano Student/Humanities will study the Negro Spiritual its origin, melody, harmony, production and research activities to give the learner insight about the spiritual, followed by written findings which students will publish.

Be able to perform 5 Spirituals and play a minimum of 3 spiriturals

Materials: (type in 8 lines or less)  CD's- Leontyne Price, Kathleen Battle, Paul Robeson, Jessye Norman, Fisk Jubilee Singers, William Warfield, Shaw's arrangement of Spirituals, H. T. Burleigh, John W. Work, Marian Anderson, Anton Dvorak. Videos-Paul Robeson, The Civil Rights Movement. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Souls of Black Folk, W.E. B. DuBois

Warm-Up: (type in four lines or less) Students write the lyrics to "Oh Freedom" "Steal Away" "My Lord What A Morn'in" Identify what Spirituals used by Dr. King in his speeches.

Procedure: (type in 43 lines or less) Read stories on the origins of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Read excerpts from "Souls of Black Folk," on the Negro Spiritual, Eileen Southern chapter on Spiritual. Search the Web for information on Dr. Samuel A. Floyd, Dr. Dominque DeLerma, as it relates to the spiritual. Instrumentation and tone color Rhythm Melody Harmony Texture Form Listen to Spirituals again and follow score. Add to your findings any musical entities or characteristics which you were abe to see rather than hear. Document the examples by referencing measure numbers. Study printed score without listening. Collect additional findings Perform the vocal parts by singing along with recorded performance. If, advance perform on your instrument. Create: an improvisation based on a Negro Spiritual arrange for another performance medium compose a new and original work modeled after the Negro Spiritual short movie clip. Create a sound track to establish a mood and atmosphere to accompany film clip.
