Welcome to the Renaissance, from the musical Something Rotten was a much smaller song that was put together in the revue. This particular song had a lack of costumes and also a lack of set. The background not only had to stay with the simplistic nature of the set it was being designed around but also complete the song as a whole. With this, inspiration from other theater’s productions of this song, and a few lyrics key lyrics of the song the process began. This song takes place in the town square and in the song it indicates, “Our houses all are Tudor.” So of course the houses surrounding the town square had to be Tudor-style houses. In order for the background to blend well with the action happening on stage, I decided to create everything in a cartoon style. This allowed the background to remain simplistic but also have the same feel as a traditional backdrop. Overall this background worked well with the people on stage and the set that was present. I do not think I would change anything if given the option. I believe that the composition as a whole works well together and could not be improved upon.
